The beautiful design on the reverse: This design has been created by Jody Clark , leading British artist specialising in low relief coin and medal design, digital sculpting. He is best known for his design of the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II but is also responsible for some beautiful coin designs like this one here.
Jody Clark has reimagined Maid Marian and has depicted her with a bow and a quiver of arrows on her back. She seems to be patiently watching and waiting standing by a tree, poised for action. She is observing her surroundings amongst the greenery of Sherwood Forest.
The inscriptions here read Maid Marian, 10 oz, fine silver, 999.9 and the year of mintage 2023.
The first official coin portrait of King Charles III
Following the death of his mother Elizabeth II in September 2022, Charles became King Charles III. The portrait has been created by Martin Jennings who works in the figurative tradition in bronze and stone, and has created some amazing statues including the one of John Betjeman at St Pancras station in London. He was chosen in a private competition held by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee.
Jennings’ Royal portrait shows Charles facing left, the opposite direction to his mother who looks right on her coins. The tradition for British monarchs to face a different direction to their predecessor dates back to the seventeenth century. As with previous British Kings, and unlike Queen Elizabeth II, he wears no crown. The portrait was designed to give an accessible look to the King and the same is true of the inscription. Indeed the English form of the King’s name “Charles” has been chosen for the legends on the coins rather than the Latin “Carolus”. Around Charles head is written CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D •10 POUNDS
This coin contains ten troy ounces of 999.9 fine silver. It is struck to the Royal Mint’s standard and just like other British currency is exempt from any Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Add it to your collection: you won’t regret it !
