History of the Gold Maple Leaf coin

The Royal Canadian Mint first made the Canadian Maple Leaf, a gold coin, in 1978. It has worldwide fame and is highly liquid. The maple leaf symbolizes the vast forests of the Canadian wilderness and people recognize it as the country's national symbol.

Canada became a top gold exporter after settlers found gold nuggets there. So, it’s fitting that one of the most prestigious gold investment coins on the market also comes from this country.

When introduced, the Maple Leaf became the only modern, freely available investment coin. Although apartheid imposed strict export restrictions on the already established Krugerrand at this point in time.

At first, the coins were very pure, with a purity of 999 out of 1000. Later, from 1982, they became even purer, with a purity of 999.9 out of 1000. This is very rare for a coin meant for investing.

In 1988, silver and platinum versions of the gold Maple Leaf were created, nine years after the original. Then, in 2005, a palladium version was also made. Today the coin is available as:

Classic design combined with sophisticated forgery protection

The design of the coin has remained virtually unchanged since its introduction:

  • The obverse (front or image side) shows the maple leaf and displays the fineness, material, and weight of the coin.
  • The back of the coin features Queen Elizabeth II, the current Queen of Canada. It also displays the coin's value and the year of its production.
  • They update the portrait of Elizabeth II every ten to twelve years. They introduced the fifth portrait in 2015 to honor her long reign.

In 2013, additional safety elements were incorporated into the coin. A delicate pattern of radial lines was added as the backdrop to the designs on both the obverse and reverse. On the obverse, there's also a tiny maple leaf, just a few millimetres in size, encircling the final two numbers of the issue year, which is especially difficult to replicate due to its small scale.
