Struck by The Perth Mint, Kookaburra silver coins are a valuable asset for their rarity, uniqueness of design and 99.9% purity. The Perth Mint has a history of limiting the production of Kookaburra one ounce silver coins which make them highly sought after and are valuable assets to include in any investment portfolio.

Struck from one ounce of 99.9 pure silver, the Kookaburra is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, and is recognised all over the world by traders. Investors will not have any problems finding a buyer when the time comes to cash in on your investment.
The maximum mintage of the one ounce coin is capped to 500,000 whilst other denominations have unlimited mintage based on demand. There was talk of the Perth Mint increasing the number of circulation coins to one million in 2013, but they decided they would continue to limit production to just 500,000 per annum.

The Kookaburra silver series is highly regarded for their unique and exquisite designs, each of which change on an annual basis. The main feature is of the Kookaburra, the largest member of the Kingfisher family and a much-loved bird from Australia for its beauty and agility in the hunt. However, the Kookaburra is mostly recognised for its distinctive call which sounds like the echoing laughter of a human.

The coin's high relief is minted on concave surfaces which results in a meticulous finish. The obverse side portrays a kookaburra perched on a tree branch with gum leaves. The design also includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, confirmation the coins are made from .999 purity and the Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. You will also find the date of issue on the obverse side.

On the reverse side of the coins is the traditional profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, the constitutional monarch of Australia since 1931 following the relinquishing of the British Empire and the creation of the Commonwealth. The one troy ounce coins have a width of 40.60mm and a diameter of 4.00mm.

Kookaburra silver coins produced between 1990 and 1998 feature the design of Queen Elizabeth II realised by sculpture Raphael Maklouf whilst coins produced from 1999 to present day depict Her Majesty’s effigy created by Ian Rank-Broadley. You also find the monetary denomination of the coins on the reverse side.

Kookaburra silver coins are minted in high relief on concave surfaces which ensures the optimum flow of metal is achieved before the die is struck. A large-scale 3D model of the design is placed into a reducing machine to trace the design into steel in order to create sufficient depth in the relief. After the six day reduction process is complete, the Mint uses a highly advanced hydraulic press to prepare a steel billet which is then machine finished, engraved and hardened to produce a working die.

As of 2014, the Kookaburra series featured 24 coins, all of which are silver other than the 2012 Discover Australia proof coin which was struck in gold.
