The design on the reverse of Britannia was created by the sculptor Philip Nathan and is remarkable. The obverse features the last portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which makes the coin even more valuable. Designed by artist Jody Clark, at age 33, he is the youngest artist to have achieved the honour of portraying the Queen on the Royal Mint coins. In this now familiar design, Her Majesty is wearing her diadem crown and the royal jewels. The inscription above her head “Elizabeth 2, D.G, REG F.D are the initials for a Latin phrase which translates to “By the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith followed by 500 POUNDS.
