Buy the 2027 Gold Sovereign from The Royal Mint at the live price: 7.32 g of 22-carat gold with King Charles III and St George. The Sovereign is Britain’s best-known gold coin and, with just under a quarter ounce of fine gold, one of the most practical ways to hold physical gold in small, easy-to-sell units.

Design: St George, the Dragon and King Charles III

The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George slaying the dragon, the design that has appeared on the modern Sovereign since 1817. The obverse shows the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings. After the rose-gold era ended in 2025, The Royal Mint returned to traditional yellow gold in 2026, so the 2027 coin is only the second yellow-gold Sovereign this century.

The bullion Sovereign also carries modern security features. Beneath the King’s portrait a latent image changes between the Tudor Crown, the royal cypher and the Tudor Rose as you tilt the coin. A fine half-tone pattern adds a second layer of protection, and micro-text on the reverse forms the Garter motto “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”. Together they make the current Sovereign much harder to copy than older dates.
