2027 Britannia Gold Coin 1/2 oz – 40th Anniversary Edition

The 2027 Britannia gold coin 1/2 oz contains half a troy ounce of fine gold – 15.55 g at a fineness of 999.9 – and carries the same one-off '40' wave privy mark and anniversary background texture as every gold Britannia of this year. With a diameter of 27.00 mm and a face value of £50, it is the second-largest of the four 2027 gold sizes. The Royal Mint introduced the Britannia in October 1987, inspired by the success of the South African Krugerrand and a developing gold bullion market around the world; 2027 marks its 40th anniversary.

The reverse shows Philip Nathan's standing Britannia with shield, olive branch and trident. The obverse carries Martin Jennings' official coinage portrait of King Charles III.

The half ounce within the Britannia range

Two 1/2 oz coins contain exactly the fine gold of one 1 oz Britannia (31.1035 g). Compared with the 1 oz coin (32.69 mm, £100), the half ounce is noticeably smaller at 27.00 mm, yet larger than the 1/4 oz (22.00 mm) and the 1/10 oz (16.50 mm). Fineness and design are identical across all sizes: 999.9 fine gold, Philip Nathan's reverse and, since 2021, the four visual security features – latent image, micro-text, tincture lines and surface animation.

Price, VAT and delivery at StoneX Bullion

The price shown is live and updates continuously. It combines the market value of 15.55 g of fine gold with a premium for minting, logistics and trading. Because these costs are spread over less metal, the premium per gram of a 1/2 oz coin is generally higher than that of the 1 oz coin; both figures are displayed on this page. As investment gold, the coin is exempt from VAT in the UK and the EU. StoneX Bullion is part of StoneX Group, a NASDAQ-listed Fortune 50 company, and an LBMA Affiliate. New coins are bought directly from the mint, and every delivery is fully insured2.

FAQ

How much gold does the 2027 1/2 oz Britannia contain?
Half a troy ounce, i.e. 15.55 g of fine gold at a fineness of 999.9. The coin has a diameter of 27.00 mm and a face value of £50.
How does the 1/2 oz compare with the 1 oz Britannia 2027?
It contains half the fine gold of the 1 oz coin, measures 27.00 mm instead of 32.69 mm and has a face value of £50 instead of £100. Design, fineness, anniversary elements and security features are the same.
Does the 1/2 oz coin also carry the '40' privy mark?
Yes. The Royal Mint applies the one-off '40' wave privy mark and the background texture with the anniversary number to all 2027 gold Britannias, including the 1/2 oz.
Why is the premium per gram higher than for the 1 oz coin?
Minting, packaging and handling costs arise per coin. On a 1/2 oz coin they are spread over 15.55 g of gold rather than 31.1035 g, so the premium per gram is generally higher. The current premium is shown on this page.
Is the 2027 1/2 oz Britannia VAT-free?
Yes. As investment gold, the 1/2 oz Britannia gold coin is exempt from VAT in the UK and the EU.
