2 oz Tudor Beasts The Bull of Clarence Silver Coin | 2023
The world-famous Royal Mint commemorates the ten heraldic beasts that line the moat bridge of Hampton Court Palace with the ‘Royal Tudor Beasts’ coin series. The animals were created at the behest of Henry VIII and symbolised the legitimacy of the king's rule by representing his royal descent. The ‘Bull of Clarence’ marks the fourth issue in the Royal Tudor Beasts series this year. The black bull of Clarence is a symbol of power and strength and is associated with the rise of the House of York in the 15th century.
This exclusive silver coin is struck in the ‘proof’ quality. The ‘proof’ quality, abbreviated to ‘PP’, is one of the most elaborate manufacturing processes for a coin.
The design of the gold coin
On the design side, you can see that the bull has been depicted with a shield bearing the instantly recognisable Tudor rose, by the master of collecting artists David Lawrence. Surrounding the motif are the words ‘BULL OF CLARENCE’ and the year of issue, ‘2023’. The value side of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III. Around the portrait, you will find the inscription ‘CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D’, CHARLES III DEI GRATIA REX FIDEI DEFENSOR, which means ‘Charles III, by the grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith’. The face value of ‘2 POUNDS’ can also be found on the coin, along with the initials ‘MJ’ of British sculptor Martin Jennings, whose portrait of King Charles adorns the value side.
