Why buy the Maple Leaf Gold Coin?
The Maple Leaf is the flagship coin of the Royal Canadian Mint and was the first coin to raise the amount of gold content. When the mintage was first introduced in 1979 to help meet the demands of gold bullion coins, investment bullion only had a purity of .992.The RCM developed advance minting techniques and increased the purity to .995. Three years later they went even better and produced the first bullion coin to feature .999 pure gold. They set the standard for gold bullion coin production around the world. From 1988 the Maple Leaf has contained a purity of .9999, the highest gold content in standard bullion coins. The pioneering achievements of the Maple Leaf set new boundaries and gives the coin historical reference and numismatic value.Given the 10 dollar ¼ oz coins carry a small premium and a reasonable price, they are an ideal option to either start your investment portfolio or add gold to your existing collection.
Design Maple Leaf Gold
The Maple Leaf has a distinctive design which features on the familiar maple leaf design created by RCM artist Walter Otto. The same symbol appears in the Canadian flag and is synonymous with the largest country in North America. The intricate design appear on the reverse of the coins together with the country of origin, the weight and the purity. The numbers 9999 appear either side of the leaf. On the obverse side is the right-facing profile of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susan Blunt and is the same image used on all Canadian coinage since 2003.
History Maple Leaf Gold
The Maple Leaf was first produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979 to rival the South African Krugerrand which had a monopoly on the bullion market. Private ownership of gold coins was also becoming mainstream as investors realised the strengths of adding gold bullion to their portfolio. The Krugerrand was the first coin to be made available to private investors on a global scale, and whilst it changed the dynamics of the market, it could not match the Maple Leaf for value. The South African coin contained 91.67% gold. The RCM developed engineering techniques that enabled them to produce coins with 99.95% pure gold – the first of its kind. The Maple Leaf set a new standard in gold coin production and the RCM went one better in 1982 they increased the gold content to 99.50%. And they didn't stop there. In 1988, the RCM pioneered gold bullion coins with .9999 purity, a standard of coin manufacturing that holds true today. In 2008, the RCM produced their first Maple Leaf coin with a .99999 purity, a 1 kilo coin worth $1 million CAD. They have produced additional other five 9 coins, but these are very rare and only minted for special edition coins. It is because of its pioneering achievements that the RCM's flagship Maple Leaf coin is held with such high esteem by investors and will continue to perform strongly in the market regardless of the year in which the coins were minted.
