1 oz Lunar III Dragon | Gold | 2024
The coins of the Lunar III series have been minted by the world-renowned Australian mint, The Perth Mint, since 2020, featuring different animal motifs based on the Chinese lunar calendar. This coin focuses on the Year of the Dragon as the fifth of twelve motifs.
The Obverse
The obverse depicts a highly detailed and fierce-looking dragon facing to the right. However, according to Chinese beliefs, the dragon is not a fearsome creature. People born under this sign are believed to possess great self-confidence and a particularly captivating presence. The dragon is considered a bringer of good luck, and those born in this sign are thought to enjoy considerable luck, wealth, and power. On the right side of the reeded coin, you can see the Chinese character for "Dragon," followed by the English word "DRAGON" and the year "2024" beneath it. On the left side, the inscription "P125" commemorates the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint.
The Reverse
The reverse features the world-renowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing a crown, pearl earrings, and the famous pearl necklace. Over her left shoulder are the initials "JC," indicating Jody Clark, the engraver from The Royal Mint. Surrounding the portrait of the former English queen is the inscription: "ELIZABETH II. 1952-2022," marking the years of her reign. It is followed by "AUSTRALIA" and the coin's denomination, "100 DOLLARS," indicating Australian dollars. Below this, you can see the weight "1oz" and the purity "9999," along with the letters "Au," which is the abbreviation for the Latin word "aurum," meaning "gold."
