It should be noted the value denoted on the face of the coins is in Australian dollars (AUD) and does not represent the true value of the coin - they are worth much more in the current economic climate. The price is calculated based on the current silver spot price plus the premium. The weight in ounces represents a "troy ounce" which weighs 31.1 grams.
Because the Kookaburra one ounce silver coin is capped to just 500,000 coins a year, they carry an extra premium. The other coins have an unlimited mintage, but numbers depend on demand. To make sure you are not disappointed StoneX Bullion recommend placing your order for Kookaburra silver coins early.
The Australian Kookaburra: Meticulous limited edition bullion
Struck by The Perth Mint, Kookaburra silver coins are a valuable asset for their rarity, uniqueness of design and 99.9% purity. The Perth Mint has a history of limiting the production of Kookaburra one ounce silver coins which make them highly sought after and are valuable assets to include in any investment portfolio.
Struck from one ounce of 99.9 pure silver, the Kookaburra is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, and is recognised all over the world by traders. Investors will not have any problems finding a buyer when the time comes to cash in on your investment.
The maximum mintage of the one ounce coin is capped to 500,000 whilst other denominations have unlimited mintage based on demand. There was talk of the Perth Mint increasing the number of circulation coins to one million in 2013, but they decided they would continue to limit production to just 500,000 per annum.
Kookaburra silver coin description
The Kookaburra silver series is highly regarded for their unique and exquisite designs, each of which change on an annual basis. The main feature is of the Kookaburra, the largest member of the Kingfisher family and a much-loved bird from Australia for its beauty and agility in the hunt. However, the Kookaburra is mostly recognised for its distinctive call which sounds like the echoing laughter of a human.
The coin's high relief is minted on concave surfaces which results in a meticulous finish. The obverse side portrays a kookaburra perched on a tree branch with gum leaves. The design also includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, confirmation the coins are made from .999 purity and the Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. You will also find the date of issue on the obverse side.
On the reverse side of the coins is the traditional profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, the constitutional monarch of Australia since 1931 following the relinquishing of the British Empire and the creation of the Commonwealth. The one troy ounce coins have a width of 40.60mm and a diameter of 4.00mm.
Kookaburra silver coins produced between 1990 and 1998 feature the design of Queen Elizabeth II realised by sculpture Raphael Maklouf whilst coins produced from 1999 to present day depict Her Majesty’s effigy created by Ian Rank-Broadley. You also find the monetary denomination of the coins on the reverse side.
There are various sizes and weights in our Kookaburra silver series ranging from half ounce to one kilogram. We have two special edition coins from 2012, the ½ oz Bush Babies and the ½ oz Discover Australia which was struck in gold. You may also be interested in the 2014 silver Plata which is available in either 10 ounce or one kilogram and weigh 312.34g and 1002.50g respectively.
The production of the Australian Kookaburra series
The Perth Mint is recognised as one of the leading private Mints in the world. The wealth of tradition and experience is unrivalled by other private mints and enables them to produce world-class bullion coins of exceptional design and uniqueness.
Using the latest blank manufacturing technology, The Perth Mint undertake lucrative projects from private clients all over the world. Their ability for exquisite design and flawless manufacturing allows them to create strikingly beautiful pieces like the Australian Kookaburra series.
Kookaburra silver coins are minted in high relief on concave surfaces which ensures the optimum flow of metal is achieved before the die is struck. A large-scale 3D model of the design is placed into a reducing machine to trace the design into steel in order to create sufficient depth in the relief. After the six day reduction process is complete, the Mint uses a highly advanced hydraulic press to prepare a steel billet which is then machine finished, engraved and hardened to produce a working die.
As of 2014, the Kookaburra series featured 24 coins, all of which are silver other than the 2012 Discover Australia proof coin which was struck in gold.
Perth Mint Quality Assurance
The Perth Mint undertakes meticulous quality assurances and take every precaution to make sure their coins cannot be easily copied. Using a combination of state-of-the-art technology and time-honoured security techniques, the Perth Mint has developed a system that uses three-dimensional plaster moulds that is impossible to replicate. The coins are then given close examination by specialist inspectors to ensure the pieces are of the highest quality.
