Silver bar sizes explained

Silver bars are sold by gram or by troy ounce (1 troy oz = 31.1035 g). The most common sizes are:

  • 1 oz silver bars (31.1 g): Small, easy to handle and easy to sell in small amounts. Popular for gifts and for a first purchase.
  • 10 oz silver bars (311 g): A middle size widely used in the UK and North America. The 250 g and 500 g bars in our range cover a similar weight.
  • 100 oz silver bars (approx. 3.11 kg): A large format used mainly by experienced buyers who want to store a lot of silver in few units.
  • 1 kilo silver bars (32.15 oz): The most widely traded large retail size in Europe, made by many LBMA Good Delivery refiners.
  • Larger silver bars: Larger formats, such as 15 kg silver bars, are close to the size of wholesale bars.

Our gram sizes (5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 50 g, 100 g, 250 g, 500 g) fill the gaps between these sizes.

Which silver bar size is best for stacking and investing?

No single silver bar size suits every buyer. The right size depends on your budget, storage and how flexibly you want to sell later:

  • Smaller silver bars (1 oz to 100 g) cost more per gram. Their advantage is that you can sell part of your holding without selling everything.
  • Larger silver bars (500 g, 1 kg and above) carry a lower premium per gram and need less storage space for the same amount of silver. Each bar represents a larger amount, so you have less flexibility when selling.
  • For stacking, many buyers combine sizes: a few 1 kg bars for the bulk of their holding and some smaller bars that are easier to sell individually.

This information is general and is not investment advice.

Silver bar premiums by size

The premium is the amount you pay above the value of the silver itself. It covers refining, minting, packaging, logistics and dealer costs. Many of these costs are roughly the same per bar, whatever the bar weighs. Spread over fewer grams, they make up a larger share of the price. That is why:

  • a 5 g or 10 g silver bar can carry a premium of more than half of its metal value,
  • a 100 g silver bar usually carries a noticeably lower percentage premium,
  • a 1 kg silver bar usually has one of the lowest percentage premiums in our silver range.

Minted bars, special designs and bars in packaging or tubes usually carry more than plain cast bars. You can see the current premium for each product on our product pages.

VAT on silver bars

Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK and the EU, but this exemption does not apply to silver. Silver bars are generally subject to VAT. How much you pay depends on your country, the applicable rules (for example, standard VAT or the margin scheme) and whether the bars are delivered or stored. The VAT that applies to your order is shown at checkout. In your account you can choose from several currencies.

Silver bars FAQ

Are silver bars VAT-free?

No. Unlike investment gold, silver bars do not qualify for a VAT exemption in the UK or the EU. The VAT that applies depends on your country and is shown at checkout.

What purity are silver bars?

Most investment silver bars are 999 (99.9%) or 999.9 (99.99%) fine silver. The fineness is stamped on the bar.

Which silver bar size has the lowest premium?

Larger bars, such as 1 kg, usually carry a lower premium per gram than 1 oz or 10 g bars, because fixed production costs are spread over more silver.

Should I buy silver bars or silver coins?

Silver bars usually cost less per gram. Some silver coins, such as the Britannia, are UK legal tender, and gains on them are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Which option suits you depends on your priorities.
