Over her reign, five different effigies of the Queen appeared on the sovereign: Mary Gillick's youthful portrait from 1957, followed by those of Arnold Machin, Raphael Maklouf, Ian Rank-Broadley and finally Jody Clark from 2015. Which portrait you receive depends on the year of your coin. In most years the reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's famous image of St George slaying the dragon.

The alloy is 22-carat gold, which is 916.7 parts gold per thousand, with the rest made up mainly of copper. That makes the coin hard-wearing. The full coin weighs about 7.98 g, and its diameter of 22.05 mm and thickness of 1.52 mm have remained the same for decades.
