The original angel was first struck under Edward IV in the fifteenth century. It became linked with royal “touching ceremonies”, in which the monarch gave the coin to the sick in the belief that it offered protection, and it is still one of the best-known names in English coinage.

How The Angel gold coin reinterprets history

Sandra Deiana’s design shows the Archangel Michael spearing Satan, depicted as a dragon. Around the scene runs PER CRUCEM TUAM SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR, “By thy Cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer”, the legend of the medieval coin. A fine security pattern in the background helps deter counterfeiting.
