Quarter-Ounce Britannia 2027 in Gold – 40th Anniversary Issue

With 7.78 g of 999.9 fine gold, the 2027 Britannia 1/4 oz is the third of the four gold sizes The Royal Mint strikes for this year. It measures 22.00 mm, has a face value of £25 and shares the anniversary features of the series: a '40' wave privy mark for four decades of the gold Britannia since 1987 and a background texture with the anniversary number.

The figure itself is centuries older than the bullion programme: Britannia has been a constant presence on British coins since the reign of Charles II and, since 1672, has appeared on the coinage of every British monarch. Here she is shown in Philip Nathan's standing design with shield, olive branch and trident; the obverse bears Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III.

22.00 mm: one diameter, two metals

The 1/4 oz gold coin has the same 22.00 mm diameter as the 2027 Britannia silver coin 1/4 oz. The two are nevertheless easy to tell apart: 999.9 gold versus 999 silver, a face value of £25 versus 50p, and a '40' privy mark versus the '30' that marks the 30th anniversary of the silver Britannia. Within the gold range, four quarter-ounce coins add up to the 31.1035 g of one 1 oz Britannia, which at 32.69 mm is about one and a half times as wide. Even at 22.00 mm, all four security features introduced in 2021 are present: latent image, micro-text, tincture lines and surface animation.

The live price follows the gold market continuously and consists of the value of 7.78 g of fine gold plus a premium for minting, logistics and trading. At the quarter-ounce size, the premium per gram is generally higher than for the 1/2 oz and 1 oz coins, as per-coin costs are spread over less gold; the current premium appears on this page. Investment gold such as this coin is exempt from VAT in the UK and the EU. As part of StoneX Group, a NASDAQ-listed Fortune 50 company, and as an LBMA Affiliate, StoneX Bullion sources new coins directly from the mint and ships every order fully insured2.
