The Red Dragon of Wales, immortalised in fine silver
The reverse of these magnificent silver coins features the Red Dragon of Wales, also known as the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr. The design for the 2018 10oz Silver Queen's Beasts Dragon coin is the work of acclaimed artist Jody Clark and is inspired by one of the famous golden sculptures created by Sir James Woodford for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey. The dragon is one of ten mythical creatures that are linked to the monarchy's lineage and heritage.
The Red Dragon of Wales was chosen by Owen Tudor as his coat of arms and was later adopted by Henry VII as a symbol of his supposed descent from Cadwaladr, the last in the Maelgwn line. Jody Clark has created a stylised version of the dragon holding a shield that bears the coat of arms of Llywelyn App Gruffudd (1258-82). Often referred to as LLywelyn the Last, the ancient monarch was the last native Prince of Wales.
