Myths and Legends: The Royal Mint Takes Collectors and Investors to the Heart of British Culture
The Origins of the Myths and Legends Series
The Myths and Legends series was introduced in 2021 and is dedicated to the most well-known figures from British folklore. The first coin in the series was Robin Hood, the legendary archer and champion of justice. Since then, the series has been expanded annually with new designs. A total of nine different motifs are planned for release.
Heroes from the Legend of Robin Hood
The first three coins in the series focus on the famous characters from the Robin Hood legend. After Robin Hood was minted in 2021, Maid Marian, the hero’s beloved, followed in 2022, along with Little John, a loyal companion of Robin Hood’s band. These early editions of the series feature detailed depictions of the characters, inspired by the legends.
New Heroes and Legends: King Arthur and Merlin
In 2023, the series was expanded to include two more historical and mythological figures: King Arthur and Merlin. These two coins are dedicated to the famous legends of the chivalrous king and his wise advisor, the wizard Merlin. These editions also impress with their intricate designs and tell the adventures of the two legendary figures.
Further Editions: Morgan le Fay and Beowulf
In 2024, The Royal Mint introduced more editions: Morgan le Fay, the mysterious enchantress from the Arthurian legend, and Beowulf, the hero from the Anglo-Saxon epic. Beowulf appears on this coin alongside Grendel, a mythical monster. These new designs promise to enrich the series with more fascinating figures from British mythology.
Artistic Design of the Motifs
The designs of the Myths & Legends silver coins have been created by talented artists at The Royal Mint. The motifs are detailed and carefully crafted to honour their historical and literary sources. Each coin tells a story, and the depictions of the characters are captured in dynamic poses that bring the respective legend to life.
Technical Details and Minting Quality
The silver coins of the Myths & Legends series are minted to the highest purity. This makes them ideal for investment purposes. The minting quality of The Royal Mint ensures that each coin is precisely and cleanly produced, making them attractive to both collectors and investors.
The Reverse of the Coins
The reverse of the coins initially featured the fifth and final official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait was designed by Jody Clark and shows the monarch in profile. With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III, the reverse of the Myths & Legends coins has also changed. From 2023 onwards, the new editions bear the official portrait of King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings.
Limited Mintage and High Demand
The silver coins of the Myths & Legends series are produced in limited mintage, which increases their appeal. Early editions, such as Robin Hood 2021, are particularly in high demand.
British Myths and Legends: A Rich Heritage
The British myths and legends on which the Myths & Legends series is based are among the most fascinating tales in Europe and are deeply rooted in the history and culture of Great Britain. From the adventures of the heroic Robin Hood to the stories of King Arthur, these legends have captured the imagination of people for centuries. They continue to influence literature, film, and art today and provide rich material for imaginative interpretations, as seen in The Royal Mint’s Myths & Legends series.
In addition to the silver coins, gold coins from the Myths and Legends series are also available.
