Lunar II Silver Coins
Since 2008 the Perth Mint, Australia's oldest mint, has been minting high-quality gold and silver coins under the Lunar II title. The coins in this successful series follow on from the preceding Lunar I series and are also dedicated to the theme of the zodiac signs of the Chinese lunar calendar. The silver coins are made from fine silver with a purity of 999.9/1000 and differ slightly in the denomination of 1 oz from the coins in the Lunar I series. Thus, the Lunar II 1 oz coins are flatter and have a larger diameter than their predecessors. Lunar II silver coins are available in denominations of ½ oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, 1 kg and 10 kg and were minted in the denomination of ½ kg up until 2010.
Lunar II Monkey 1 oz Silver 2016 - Design and Motif
The zodiac signs of the Chinese calendar not only differ in regard to the types of animals but even more so in regard the length of time for which they apply. The so-called star signs change every 30 to 31 days in European astrology, but according to Chinese horoscopes they apply for twelve months and thus affect the course of an entire year. The year of the monkey begins on 8 February 8 2016. This erratic and sociable animal should then steer the events of the new year.
In a circle of multiple overlapping lines, the motif side bears a depiction of two monkeys. The two animals appear to be a mother and her child sitting on a thick branch. The younger animal to the right of the image is handing a round fruit to the mother. Above the heads of the monkeys, there is an inscription in Chinese stating the name of the animal. Below the image, the inscription "YEAR OF THE MONKEY" can be read. The image design is by the artist Ing Ing Jong, whose initials "IJ" can be seen next to the young monkey on the bark of the tree trunk.
The nominal side shows a portrait of the British Queen Elizabeth II, who is Head of the Commonwealth and Head of State for Australia. The representation by Ian Rank-Broadley dates from 1998 and shows the Queen in profile wearing a diamond tiara. An inscription states the name of the Queen "ELIZABETH II", the country of issue "AUSTRALIA", the material of the coin "SILVER", the fine content "999" as well as the year of issue "2016" and the nominal value of "1 DOLLAR".
