Design of the 1 oz Vienna Philharmonic gold coin

Both sides were engraved by Thomas Pesendorfer, chief engraver of the Austrian Mint. The obverse shows the great organ in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The reverse brings together the orchestra's instruments: a Vienna horn, a bassoon, a harp, four violins and a cello. Because the design has stayed the same since 1989, coins from different years look almost identical and trade at the same gold-based price.

Coins struck before 2002 carry a face value of 2,000 Austrian schillings; since the introduction of the euro the face value has been 100 euros. Your delivery may contain either version. The face value has no effect on price, which depends only on the gold content.

With a diameter of 37 mm, the Philharmonic is wider and thinner than most other one-ounce coins. This makes it easy to recognise, but it also means that pure 24-carat gold shows handling marks more readily, so keep it in its sachet or a capsule. The Philharmonic is investment gold and VAT-free in the EU.
