1 oz Tudor Beasts Unicorn Gold Coin | 2024
Obverse Side
Behold the powerful sight of "The Seymour Unicorn" on the obverse side of this coin, proudly displaying a magnificently modeled coat of arms held in its forefeet. Part of the series "The Royal Tudor Beasts" by the renowned mint The Royal Mint, this coin commemorates the ten heraldic beasts that guard the moat bridge of Hampton Court Palace. Commissioned by Henry VIII, these beasts symbolize his royal lineage and assert the legitimacy of royal rule. The wild unicorn was considered the strongest of all creatures and also symbolizes fertility and purity. The theme of fertility held great significance for Henry VIII, and it is believed he may have presented this unicorn to Jane Seymour to underline his desire for a son.
Surrounding the unicorn, the inscriptions in uppercase letters include: "SEYMOUR UNICORN," "1 oz," "FINE GOLD," purity "999.9," and the year of minting "2024."
Reverse Side
The reverse side features the portrait of British King Charles III. Designed by Martin Jennings, whose initials "MJ" can be discerned upon close inspection around the neck of the portrait, this image was personally authorized by the king. Unlike his mother Queen Elizabeth II, Charles III gazes leftward. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions "CHARLES III," "D.G.REX. F. D," and the face value of the reeded coin "100 POUNDS." The abbreviated letters stand for "By the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith," in translation from Latin.
