The Tudor Beasts Lion of England Coin 1/4 oz Gold 2022
StoneX Bullion is really pleased to present the latest coin of the Tudor Beasts Collection: the Lion of England ¼ oz of gold coin.
The Tudor Beasts Series from The Royal Mint is a successor to the popular Queen Beasts Series which ran from 2016 to 2021 and covered heraldic beasts that lined Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. This new Tudor Beasts Series focuses on the Tudor Dynasty in the 15th and 16th century.
Starting when Henry Tudor (Henry VII of England) defeated Richard III in 1485, the Tudor dynasty lasted until Queen Elizabeth I’s rule ended in 1603. After the death of Henry VII and the passing away of his eldest son, Arthur, the notorious Henry VIII became the King. His most famous residence was Hampton Court Palace, a place he used for celebration and pleasure and where these heraldic symbols are heavily featured.
The Lion has been featured on the shield of England for as long as it has existed. It represents English courage, strength, dignity and pride. The Lion of England remains an iconic heraldic symbol to this very day and perhaps in modern times is more representative of Britishness than Englishness.
On the reverse side of the coin we can find the representation of the beautiful Lion matching the well-visited statue in Hampton Court Palace. It wears the Imperial Crown and has been designed-like all the 10 coins of the series, by David Lawrence, an illustrator and sculptor known for his Britannia reverses in 2018 and 2019. He claimed that it was an honor to be chosen to depict the beasts on a coin collection and also a huge challenge. He has managed to find a new vision which is still true to the past and be inspired by the lion of the statue without copying it entirely.
The inscriptions featured on the reverse are LION OF ENGLAND, 2022 along with the weight and purity of the coin.
The obverse of the coin depicts the profile of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark, Her Majesty is represented wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This is only the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen to appear on British circulating coins since her accession to the throne in 1952. The portrait is designed by Jody Clark, who was the first Royal Mint engraver to be chosen to create a definitive royal coinage portrait in over 100 years.
