The 1/2 oz Gold Krugerrand
Given the success and popularity of the Krugerrand, the South African Mint manufactures smaller version of the coin including the 1/2oz con which offers exceptional value for money. Featuring all the same qualities as the highly prized one ounce Krugerrand, the 1/2oz counterpart offers alternative uses given it is the correct size for a ring or pennant!
Why buy 1/2 oz Gold Krugerrands?
The 1/2 oz South African Krugerrand stands out as a pure investment, combining liquidity, portability and supreme manufacturing. Like the brand name of any famous product, the Krugerrand is the most renowned and widely circulated investment coin in the world, known even to people who do not buy gold. New issues typically sell almost as much as US Gold Eagles, but don't forget that Krugerrands are many years ahead so their volume in the market is much higher. The 1/2 oz denomination has the extra advantage that is lighter and sold for almost half the price of a 1oz coin so it easier to carry and sell.

History of the Krugerrands
The Krugerrand gold bullion coin gets its name from the popular four-term President of the old Republic of South Africa, Paul Kruger (1883 – 1900) who stood against the British, and South Africa's national currency, the Rand. In 1966, the South African Reserve Bank, gave authorization to the Rand Refinery Ltd. to manufacture gold blanks and the South African Mint to strike the blanks into Krugerrand gold bullion coins. On July 3rd, 1967 the first 1oz Krugerrand gold bullion coin was struck by the South African Mint. In that first year 40,000 regular Krugerrands were struck with an additional 10,000 of the specially prepared proof coins targeted toward collectors. By 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market, and due to the unrivaled success of the 1oz Krugerrand, South Africa introduced the fractional ½oz coin, with a mintage of 374,000- and 60 proofs. That same year the mint stamped out 3,143,000 of the full size Krugers, with 12,000 proofs. With the lifting of the apartheid in 1994 and the ascent of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela to the office of President of South Africa, the coin regained its status as one of the leading gold bullion coins traded world-wide.
Security of Krugerrand coins
StoneX Bullion only buy Krugerrand coins that have been manufactured by the South African Mint. Before Krugerrands leave the Mint, the diameter, thickness and weight of each coin are meticulously checked. To make sure the coin is not counterfeit, the same procedure should be followed by the potential buyer. Today's fake coins are made of lead and copper that weigh 30% less than a real gold coin. These fakes can easily be detected by checking their specifications. Remember, however that the relief on both surfaces should also be right, and that is an expert's job. The delicate surface image of a coin requires a 10 tonne stamping machine to create the fine detail that aids in identification.
