The big 5 series produced by the Rand Refinery is back with this 1 oz Elephant gold coin 2023. The series will introduce a new bullion coin every five years beginning with the elephant followed by the lion, the rhino , the leopard and the buffalo.

The term “Big Five” originated when big game hunters came to Africa to hunt the most imposing animals for trophies, before conservation efforts became a priority. The elephant is probably the strongest symbol of all, an emblem and ambassador of the rich culture of South Africa.It also represents strength and family unity and is the largest living land animal.

This coin definitely celebrates the majestic animal and the design on both sides is an homage to the elephant.

The obverse of the coin presents a beautiful elephant standing tall. The details including the large trunk and the tusks are amazing and the beast looks like it is coming towards us, walking through the bush. It almost looks like it was done in 3D impression and you can almost see the elephant moving when you move the angle of the coin.

Beneath the design, in the circle, can be found the inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA", "BIG FIVE 2022" and the South African coat of arms.

The reverse shows two halves of an elephant's head. Placing two of these coins next to each other gives a full close-up portrait of an elephant. When several of these coins are placed next to each other, an entire herd of elephants appears. In the center, the denomination "FIFTY RAND", the weight "1OZ" and the fineness "Au 999.9" are shown.

Since 1921, the date of its opening, the Rand Refinery has refined over 50 000 tonnes of gold (nearly 30% of all the gold that has ever been mined!!).One of its flagship is the Krugerrand but this Big 5 Series has also been extremely successful since its creation in 2019.
