The Royal Canadian Mint's Canadian Wildlife series of silver coins is one of its most successful to date. The six-coin collection launched in 2011 and celebrates the iconic animals that roam the Canadian wilderness. Canadian Wildlife Silver Coins: A prized collection amongst bullion enthusiasts

The Royal Canadian Mint first introduced the iconic Wildlife Silver Series in 2011 to celebrate native animals that are synonymous with the country’s heritage. The collection features six coins in all and were been minted biannually between 2011 and 2013. Only 1 million of each coin was produced for circulation, but it is the exquisite beauty of their designs that make them true collectible items. The collection includes, the Timber Wolf and the Grizzly which were manufactured in 2011, the Cougar and Moose from 2012 and the finally the Pronghorn Antelope followed by the Wood Bison in 2013. Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint who has overseen the production of the Wildlife Series describes the coins as "a majestic example of Canada's abundant wildlife, as well as a great conservation success story.” The coins were received with such enthusiasm for the Wildlife selection that the Royal Canadian Mint has followed up the collection with a Canadian Arctic series which was launched in 2013 followed by the Birds of Prey series in 2014. A gold series was also launched in 2014 starting with the howling wolf.

Canadian Wildlife Silver Coin Description

Each of the silver coins in the wildlife series feature unique designs by three different illustrators.

On the obverse of all the coins is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain designed by Canadian artist, Susan Blunt. The obverse side of the coins also denote the face value of the coins and the year of issue.

However, it is the reverse of the coins that owners truly appreciate and give the coins there distinction. As the series title suggest, each coin features a wild animal native to Canada and that is symbolic of the country. The first four coins, namely the Timber Wolf, Grizzly, Cougar and Moose were designed by William Woodruff, the Senior Engraver for the Royal Canadian Mint. The two coins produced in 2013, the Longhorn Antelope and Wood Bison, were realised by Canadian natural science illustrator, Emily S. Damastra.The reverse face also give more details about the coins. The words etched in capitals inform buyers that the coin is legal tender in Canada and is made of pure silver – ARGENT PUR. The number .9999 and 1 oz., denote the weight of the coin in troy ounces thus 31.1 grams, and that it contains has a .9999 fineness, thus made from 99.99 per cent pure silver. The coins have a diameter of 38mm and a thickness of 3.29mm.

The production of the Wildlife coins

The Canadian Wildlife series were struck at the Royal Canadian Mint’s (RCM) Ottawa branch, one of three in the country along with Winnipeg and Vancouver. The RCM is one of the most advanced high-tech plants in the world and uses the latest technologies to produce bullion. The institute prides itself as an innovators in the production of bullion products and produces over a billion circulation coins every year. Although the RCM was initially established in 1911, the refinery did not produce its first bullion gold until 1979, and investors have been guaranteed excellent quality that meets world bullion standards ever since.

The Wildlife Series are among the best silver bullion products manufactured by the mint and set new standards in collectible coin sets. Furthermore, the limited number of wildlife coins produced make them rare items and as such are highly sought after assets making them ideal investment for gifts, savings or retirement funds.

Royal Canadian Mint Quality Assurance
