Edward VII Gold 1902-1910

When Edward VII acceded to the British throne on 9 August 1902, he was the first monarch from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (now Windsor). He quickly dispelled the prejudices held against him and even became a very popular monarch, even though he was overshadowed by his famous predecessor Queen Victoria. Due to her marriage policy, Edward was also known as the ‘Uncle of Europe’ because he was related to almost all the reigning noble houses in Europe, from the Norwegian King Haakon VII to the Greek King George I.

The sovereign coins bearing his portrait are as popular today as Edward himself. Due to their relatively high copper content, sovereigns are still in very good condition even after more than a hundred years and having been used as circulation coins. As coins with a low premium, sovereigns are extremely popular with investors.
