GOLD BRITANNIA BAR 5GR
Who is Britannia featured on this beautiful 5gr gold Bar now available for sale on StoneX Bullion?
Britannia is an ancient term for Roman Britain and also a female personification of the island. The name is Latin, and derives from the Greek form Prettanike or Brettaniai, which originally designated a collection of islands with individual names, including Albion or Great Britain.
It is in the 2nd century that Roman Britannia came to be personified as a goddess, armed with a trident and shield and wearing a Corinthian Helmet. As the overseas and furthest territory of the Roman Empire, it soon became identified with the goddess of warfare and water. Thus, the Roman goddess Minerva became Britannia, and the personification of the British Isles. The Latin name Britannia long survived the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the 5th century,
Today she is the embodiment of the United Kingdom. She “rules the waves” as the song says and she symbolises British national pride, unity, courage and strength.
Britannia depicted on the coins
Britannia first appeared on coins back in the Roman era and when the Romans left Britain in the early 400s, Britannia vanished from coins and wasn’t to appear again for several centuries.(in 1672 to be precise when she was reintroduced by Charles II) She continues to be reinterpreted by different artists to this day, with different aspects of her nature and symbolism emphasised to reflect the times
Here the design has been created by Jody Clark, famous for being the youngest artist to have portrayed Elizabeth II for the Royal Mint.
His rendering of Britannia is a refreshingly different interpretation of an iconic figure. Clark’s design is the eleventh in the collection, and portrays a very feminine figure, dressed in chainmail holding a trident in her left hand and a shield in her right. Her plumed helmet is tilted back to reveal her face with long hair streaming past her shoulders.
