The ten heraldic beasts, which you can admire at the moat bridge of Hampton Court Palace, were commissioned by King Henry VIII and were intended to symbolize the legitimacy of his rule at that time. These animals were signs of his royal lineage. The unicorn depicted on the coin is the 5th edition of the series "The Royal Tudor Beasts". The unicorn has been attributed with many attributes: it was considered the strongest creature and a symbol of purity and fertility. Especially fertility was a major theme for Henry VIII as he eagerly desired a male heir.

The Obverse

The design of this unicorn is a creation of the artist David Lawrence. The coat of arms that the animal "carries" seems to hold special significance, as it is securely fastened to the base of the coin by a sort of chain.
