The reverse side of the 2022 British Silver Tudor Beasts Lion coin depicts the famous Lion of England supporting the Royal Arms of King Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour.
The inspiration for the design created by David Lawrence comes from the statue of the Lion which lines the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace, (alongside the other 9 statues the Seymour Panther, the Bull of Clarence, the Tudor Dragon, the Greyhound of Richmond, the Royal Dragon, the Yale of Beaufort, the Seymour Unicorn, the Queen’s Panther and the Queen’s Lion). The beasts symbolise the legitimacy of the king’s rule by portraying his regal ancestry.
The obverse of the coin features the classic design of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. Becoming the youngest designer to produce a portrait of the Queen, Clark had only been working as an engraver at The Royal Mint for two years prior to an opportunity to produce the famed effigy. Entering a competition to curate the prominent design on a whim, Clark became the first engraver from The Royal Mint selected to create such portraiture in over 100 years. Here, Her Majesty is wearing her diadem crown and the royal jewels and we can find her name, the legal tender of the coin 5 pounds and the initials D.G REG F.D (By the Grace of God Queen and Defender of the Faith )
