1 oz Rwanda Shoebill Silver Coin (2019)
The motif
On the motif side of this fluted coin, you can see the African continent in the upper part of the coin. Below that, you can see two shoebills in the swamp. The huge beak of these animals gave this creature its name because it resembles a shoe. These two images are framed by the inscription on the left side of the coin, ‘AFRICAN OUNCE’. On the right side, you can read the year of issue, ‘2019’, the weight and the fineness: ‘1 oz FINE SILVER 999’.
The value side
Here you can see the coat of arms of Rwanda. On the edge of the coin, you can read: ‘BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA’, which translates as ‘National Bank of Rwanda’. Below that, the nominal value is shown: ‘AMAFARANGA 50 MIRONGO ITANU’. This is 50 Rwandan francs.
The special feature
This coin, or rather this coin series, is an example of so-called ‘agency issues’, meaning that the official country of issue and the country of production are not identical. In this case, Germany is the producer and has been licensed by the National Bank of Rwanda to issue this series.
