The 2016 edition of the Royal Mint's bullion coin again shows the portrait of Britannia introduced in 2012. Britannia was already the tutelary Goddess of the British Isles during the Roman occupation. In the time when the national states developed in the 17th century, Britannia was rediscovered as the epitome of the British nation. With her storm-beaten deftness, helmet, trident and shield, Britannia is the symbol of the independence and braveness of the United Kingdom.

For the first time, the fifth official portrait of the Queen was used for the reverse of the silver coin. The official coin portrait is normally only changed every ten to twelve years - it was last changed in 1998. Thanks to its famous name giver and the high content of alloy of 999.9/1000 today Britannia is one of the most popular coins in the United Kingdom next to the sovereign.
