Britannia has been a symbol of Great Britain for over 2,000 years. She first appeared on Roman coins issued during the time of the Emperor Hadrian around AD119 and again during the reign of Charles II in 1672.

The British Royal Mint launched the Silver Britannia in 1997 following the success of the Gold Britannia and to meet growing demand for Bullion Coins. The Silver Britannia was an instant success and it is now regarded as one of the Royal Mint’s signature coins. The coin featured the same classic Britannia design that sculptor Philip Nathan created for the launch of the Gold Britannia in 1987. His Britannia is recognised around the world and is presented as a symbol of strength complete with shield, trident, and olive branch.
