Launched on Steve Irwin Day (Thursday15th November) 2012 with a special ceremony at Australia Zoo, the Australian Saltwater Crocodile series was created to carry on the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to the observation and conservation of Australia’s wildlife.
The 2013, one troy oz. silver frosted "Bindi" Australian Saltwater Crocodile uncirculated coin features a "two-tone" frosted design effect that gives it an impressive finish and proof-like quality. Only 10,000 pieces were minted, presented with an engaging background card, and the "Bindi" automatically became a collector’s item.
The first commemorative coin of the series was named after Irwin’s favourite saltwater crocodile, Bindi, who has found shelter in the zoo for over 25 years; during the launch ceremony the Irwin family were presented by EMK with an adoption donation of AUS$ 10,000 for Bindi.
Stephen Robert "Steve" Irwin (22 February 1962 -4 September 2006),also known as "The Crocodile Hunter" (in the sense that he relocated and sheltered crocodiles),was an Australian wildlife expert, television personality, and passionate conservationist. Irwin and his wife owned and operated Australia Zoo (originally Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, renamed in 1992),founded by Irwin's parents in Beerwah, about 50 miles north of the Queensland state capital city of Brisbane. Irwin’s father had educated him on reptiles from an early age, and he began handling crocodiles at the age of nine under his supervision. Bindi is also the name of Irwin’s daughter who has stated that, according to her father, the word means "little girl" in the language of the Aborigines.
Together with the commemorative version, the Royal Australian Mint featured Bindi on a colour printed silver proof coin as the second 2013 release for the Australian Saltwater Crocodile series. This version has an equally appealing saltwater crocodile depiction and was also released at a very low mintage (5,000 coins),each coin offered in a presentation box.
The 2014 Australian Saltwater Crocodile series issue features Graham, a staggering 350 kg saltwater crocodile who has been an occupant at Australia Zoo since 1988.

The 2013 1 troy oz. "Bindi" Australian Saltwater Crocodile frosted silver bullion coin is an impressive 40 mm in diameter, weighs 1.0001 troy oz. (31.10 g),and has a face value of AUS $1.
The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in Ian Rank-Broadley’s version with IRF inscribed under Her Majesty’s neck, together with the words "ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA" and the year of issue along the coin’s circular fringe.
The reverse features an amazing design of a saltwater crocodile in a fierce predator stance, facing the viewer, his deadly jaws wide open as if he is ready to attack. In the background we find one central and three peripheral concentric ring motifs creating a dazzling effect. Here we have the inscriptions "SALTWATER CROCODILE, BINDI", and the coin’s face value, weight and purity.
