"Bindi" silver coins: Breathtaking beauty and innovative design in quality silver bullion

The Perth Mint is famous among collectors for producing high quality silver bullion coins of semi-numismatic value. It is not often, however, that these beautiful coins depicting Australia’s diverse indigenous wildlife tell such an exciting and touching story, as in the case of the Australian Saltwater Crocodile series.

The Royal Australian Mint and EMK Coins and Precious Metals, one of the world’s leading distributors of numismatic products, have partnered to capture the world’s largest reptile in a new coin series that features Australia Zoo’s saltwater crocodiles. Launched on Steve Irwin Day (Thursday15th November) 2012 with a special ceremony at Australia Zoo, the Australian Saltwater Crocodile series was created to carry on the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to the observation and conservation of Australia’s wildlife.

The 2013, one troy oz. silver frosted "Bindi" Australian Saltwater Crocodile uncirculated coin features a "two-tone" frosted design effect that gives it an impressive finish and proof-like quality. Only 10,000 pieces were minted, presented with an engaging background card, and the "Bindi" automatically became a collector’s item.

The first commemorative coin of the series was named after Irwin’s favourite saltwater crocodile, Bindi, who has found shelter in the zoo for over 25 years; during the launch ceremony the Irwin family were presented by EMK with an adoption donation of AUS$ 10,000 for Bindi.

Stephen Robert "Steve" Irwin (22 February 1962 -4 September 2006),also known as "The Crocodile Hunter" (in the sense that he relocated and sheltered crocodiles),was an Australian wildlife expert, television personality, and passionate conservationist. Irwin and his wife owned and operated Australia Zoo (originally Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, renamed in 1992),founded by Irwin's parents in Beerwah, about 50 miles north of the Queensland state capital city of Brisbane. Irwin’s father had educated him on reptiles from an early age, and he began handling crocodiles at the age of nine under his supervision. Bindi is also the name of Irwin’s daughter who has stated that, according to her father, the word means "little girl" in the language of the Aborigines.

Together with the commemorative version, the Royal Australian Mint featured Bindi on a colour printed silver proof coin as the second 2013 release for the Australian Saltwater Crocodile series. This version has an equally appealing saltwater crocodile depiction and was also released at a very low mintage (5,000 coins),each coin offered in a presentation box.

The 2014 Australian Saltwater Crocodile series issue features Graham, a staggering 350 kg saltwater crocodile who has been an occupant at Australia Zoo since 1988.

A veritable collector’s dream, all silver Australian Saltwater Crocodile coins set a benchmark of supreme craftsmanship and innovative design, and individual hard plastic encapsulation of each coin does an excellent job keeping them safe from being scratched or damaged, making them unique amongst silver bullion coins.

The production of the Australian Saltwater Crocodile

Established as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint in 1899, the Perth Mint's primary functions to refine gold from Western Australia's eastern goldfields and strike gold coinage continue to this day, with precious metal coins being struck onsite at the Mint, and gold refined at the Perth Mint Refinery.

The standard of minting excellence for which the Perth Mint is renowned comes from its wealth of tradition and experience, matched by the latest world-class coin manufacturing technology.

Perth Mint coins stand out for their sublime artistic design, and the meticulous engraving and production of the dies, using age-old trusted techniques combined with advanced technology. State-of-the-Art minting and finishing, meticulous quality control and safety packaging to protect the delicate pure silver surfaces guarantee that Australian Saltwater Crocodiles enjoy all the care and attention of the Perth Mint’s unrivalled expertise and will be valued for their high-quality finish and artistic workmanship.

Perth Mint Quality Assurance

Today, the Perth Mint is a member of an elite group of world mints whose pure gold, silver and platinum legal tender coins are universally acknowledged and trusted for their superior quality and innovative design.

The Mints’ manufacturing techniques-especially as far as the making of the dies is concerned- together with the complexity of the design where frosted and non-frosted surfaces mix in a spectacular combination, makes it impossible for Australian Saltwater Crocodile coins to be convincingly copied, especially since highly sophisticated equipment unlikely to be found anywhere else is used in the minting process.
