Kangaroo 1 oz Silver

In 2015 the Australian Perth Mint issued a silver version of the popular kangaroo coin for the first time. Whether or not the bullion coin made of purest 9999 fine silver remains a once-off release or becomes a whole series of coins is as yet unclear. One thing is sure; the silver kangaroo is a perfect investment coin and is suitable for any portfolio.

A new investment coin from Australia's most famous mint

In 1986, the Australian Perth Mint issued an investment coin in gold for the first time, featuring the animal which is the national symbol of Australia on the front: the kangaroo. In only a very short time, this coin became one of the most successful bullion coins worldwide and is comparable to a number of important coins, such as the Canadian Maple Leaf or South African Krugerrand. Nearly 30 years later, the Perth Mint decided to follow the gold coin with a silver version, also featuring the popular motif on the front. But it is not just the motive that makes the Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Coin a special coin but rather the enticingly low price, calculated on the basis of a very low surcharge on the value of the material and the coin's purity of 9999 fine silver. From 21/09/2015, this coin will be released and is expected to be produced as an unlimited edition. Whether or not the minting of the coin will be discontinued completely or further releases will follow is not yet known.

The kangaroo as a well-known motif on a new silver coin

The motif on the new Australian coin has, however, been familiar to connoisseurs for a long time. In fact, on the motif side the viewer can see a design by the Australian coin designer Stuart Devlin, who was responsible for designing the famous red kangaroo for the Red Kangaroo 1 oz gold coin. The jumping red giant kangaroo is located in the middle of a stylised aureola against a matt background.

The motif is surrounded by a wide margin that is filled in with waved lines, framing the motif. This margin contains the name of the coin "AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO", as well as a "P" to the right as the official mint mark for Perth Mint, and in the lower area states the year of issue, the fine weight "1 oz", purity "9999" and the material "SILVER". The back of the coin also presents the classic image of the British Queen Elizabeth II, who as head of the Commonwealth is on all the official coins of the Member States. The portrait by the British artist Ian Rank-Broadley dating from 1998 shows the Queen in profile with wavy hair, a crown and a pearl earring. Here the motif is also framed by a wave structure, in which the name of the depicted "Elizabeth II", the country of issue "AUSTRALIA" and the nominal value of "1 DOLLAR" are inscribed.

Another new feature is an inscribed "A" (for Australia) on one of the faces of the coin, which has been created using a micro laser procedure and can only be seen using a magnifying glass. This additional inscription is supposed to act as a further security feature and make counterfeiting more difficult.

The Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver as an investment coin

Because of the extremely low issue price, the Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Coin is considered to be a cheap and efficient silver investment coin and is therefore comparable to the Canadian Maple Leaf and the American Silver Eagle. As a classic investment coin, purchasing the Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver in larger quantities is recommended. Starting from a quantity of 25 coins, StoneX Bullion delivers coins in a hard plastic tube. These tubes protect your coins from scratches and dust and, if required, can save space and be stacked safely. If you buy ten tubes, you will receive these in the original master box used by the Perth Mint.
