1 oz Britannia Charles III Platinum | 2023
The 1 oz Britannia platinum coin is a 99.95% pure platinum bullion coin minted by the world-famous Royal Mint, which is fully owned by the British government. Britannia has a long-standing relationship with British coinage. The female personification of Britain first appeared on Roman coins circa AD 119 but she has evolved over the years to reflect the nation’s strengths and values. The 2023 version is truly remarkable and also features the first portrait of King Charles III so let us tell you why this coin should be added to your collection.
The iconic design from Philip Nathan
The design on the reverse of Britannia was created by the sculptor Philip Nathan and is remarkable. Britannia, the female warrior, the national personification of Britain, is holding a trident in her right arm and a shield bearing the Union Jack with her left hand. One of the oldest symbols of Britain, Britannia stands proud before the ocean and is surrounded by inscriptions bearing her name, year of mintage, weight and purity 999.5.
The design continues to dazzle, winning awards and defining security in the bullion market with four groundbreaking features.
The four security features on the coin
Surface animation provides a background for Britannia, reflecting the flow of waves as the coin is moved, and between this and the banding of the coin you will find micro-text with the wording ‘Decus et Tutamen’, which translates as ‘An ornament and a safeguard’ and describes the features that both decorate and protect the coin. A latent feature in the lower-hand segment of the coin switches between a trident and a padlock based on the viewer’s perspective – emphasising her maritime strength and the coin’s secure nature – and details such as the Union flag on Britannia’s shield have been specially highlighted with tincture lines.
The new portrait of King Charles III
Prince Charles became His Majesty The King Charles III on Saturday 6th May 2023. The coins follow centuries of tradition with the monarch now facing left - the opposite way to his predecessor. As with previous British kings, and unlike the Queen, he wears no crown.
King Charles's portrait is the first coin design undertaken by Martin Jennings, but his public sculptures include poets John Betjeman, in St Pancras Station in London, and Philip Larkin in Hull..
Of this work, Jennings says: “The portrait was sculpted from a photograph of The King, and was inspired by the iconic effigies that have graced Britain’s coins over the centuries. It is the smallest work I have created, but it is humbling to know it will be seen and held by people around the world for centuries to come.”
On this side can be seen the following inscriptions: CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 10 pounds •
