1/4 oz Tudor Beasts Unicorn Gold Coin | 2024
The Obverse
What a powerful sight: "The Seymour Unicorn" greets you on the obverse, holding a splendidly modeled coat of arms in its forefeet. With the series "The Royal Tudor Beasts," the renowned mint The Royal Mint commemorates the ten heraldic beasts that guard the moat bridge at Hampton Court Palace. Modeled by order of Henry VIII, these creatures symbolize his royal lineage and thus the legitimacy of royal rule. This wild unicorn was considered the strongest of all animals and also stands for fertility and purity. The theme of "fertility" was of great significance to Henry VIII, and it is said that the king may have underscored his desire for a son by gifting this unicorn to Jane Seymour.
The inscription around the unicorn is designed in uppercase letters: "SEYMOUR UNICORN," "1/4 oz," "FINE GOLD," purity level "999.9," and the minting year "2024."
The Reverse
The reverse features the portrait of the British King Charles III. Designed by artist Martin Jennings, whose initials "MJ" can be discerned with close inspection, usually near the neck of the portrait. This depiction was personally authorized by the king. Unlike his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, he gazes to the left. Surrounding the portrait, you'll find the inscription "CHARLES III," "D.G.REX. F. D," and the face value of the reeded coin, "25 POUNDS." The abbreviated letters stand for "Dei Gratia Rex, Fidei Defensor," which translates to "King by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith."
