Sovereign Elizabeth II Jubilee Gold Coin (2012)
The 2012 Gold Pound celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, whose reign began on 6 February 1952.
The modern interpretation of St George and the Dragon divided opinion between traditionalist critics who were unhappy with the coin's design, and other commentators who welcomed the design but expressed disappointment that it was not accompanied by a new portrait of Her Majesty for the obverse, as the Mint chose to retain the design created by Ian Rank-Broadleys.
One thing, however, on which all experts agree, being a one-year commission, this coin is a must for any collector and investor.
The designer, Paul Day, opted for a medieval Arthurian version of St George. The dragon is more menacing than Pistrucci's depiction. The spear, stuck in the dragon's head, divides the design into two parts.
