The Half-Sovereign 2020 Gold Coin
Sovereign coins were first released in 1498 during the reign of Henry VII. They have, however, been most present over the past 2 centuries. Their long historical presence has made them amongst the most prestigious bullion gold coins in the world. The Sovereign is The Royal Mint’s 22-carat gold flagship coin.
The Sovereign - George and the Dragon
The 2020 Half-Sovereign Gold Coin features George and the Dragon on its reverse design by Benedetto Pistrucci. Benedetto was born in Rome in 1784, where he first gained a strong reputation as a talented gem engraver. He was invited to come to England, by the Prince Regent who introduced him to William Wellesley Pole, the Master of the Mint. Upon this introduction, he was commissioned to create designs for the new gold and silver coins of George III. He later went on to work closely alongside the Mint designing many unique coins and pieces. He is perhaps most well known for his Waterloo Medal and his St George and the dragon, to this day still featured on the Gold Sovereign Coins.
