The Sovereign gold coin is amongst the most prestigious coins in the world. It has a long history as it first appeared in 1498. These coins were initially used as gifts for nobles rather than conventional currency. The modern Sovereign coin appeared in 1817. The coin featured the classic George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci. Pistrucci was born in Rome in 1784 and was later introduced to William Wellesley Pole, the Master of the Mint, by Prince Regent. He was originally well known as a gem engraver and later became recognized for his work with the Mint such as the Waterloo Medal and his St George and the dragon, to this day still featured on the Gold Sovereign Coins.
