Lunar II Gold Coins
The Australian Perth Mint, which is the oldest mint on the continent, released the first coin in the new Lunar II series in 2008. As was to be expected, the first edition in gold immediately matched the great success of its predecessor, the Lunar I series. The high-quality gold coins with a purity of 999.9/1000 fine gold are to be minted up until 2019 in eight different denominations and are available in weight categories from 1/20 oz up to 1 kg. The motifs on the coins change annually and each new edition depicts the current zodiac sign of the Chinese lunar calendar. In addition to the Lunar II gold series, a Lunar II silver series is also available, with motifs that differ from the gold edition.
1 oz Lunar II Monkey Gold 2016 - Design and Motif
The zodiac signs of the lunar calendar together with the five elements of wood, metal, water, fire and earth form a 60-year cycle. Each year is traditionally influenced by a single zodiac sign and element and thus also gets its name from this. Therefore, on 8 February 2016 the year of the monkey begins and it is also this lively animal that provides the motif for the current Lunar coin.
A circle of several lines forms the frame on the motif side, with the monkey in the middle. The animal sits on the thick branch of a tree; a fruit can be seen in its foliage to the right of the little monkey, which the monkey appears to have fixed his gaze upon. This image was designed by the Australian artist Ing Ing Jong, whose initials can be seen on the bark of the tree to the outer edge of the picture. The inscription next to the monkey states the name of the animal, while the Latin letter "P" refers to Perth Mint where it was minted.
The front traditionally shows an image of the British Queen Elizabeth II, who is Head of the Commonwealth and the official Head of State for Australia. The portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley dates from 1998 and shows the Queen in profile wearing a diamond tiara. An inscription above the image states the name of the Queen "ELIZABETH II" and the country of issue "AUSTRALIA". Below the image, information on the coin material "SILVER", the fine content of "999.9", the year of issue "2016" and the nominal value of "1 DOLLAR" can be read.
