The Chinese say that people born under the influence of the goat are easy-going, charming and gifted.

Design of the Lunar Goat Coin

The beautifully crafted coin is engraved with a single male adult goat standing with its hooves on a rock with stylised mountains in the background. The exquisite design is extremely detailed. The goat's ruffled coat is clearly visible and the black shading around the bottom of the horns add a touch of class. The reverse of the coin also features the Chinese symbol which depicts the year of the goat together with the words written in English along the bottom curve.

The obverse side features the familiar effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley together the country of origin, the year of issue and the value of 100 Australian dollars, although in the current economic climate the coins are much more valuable. The obverse of the coins also show the weight in oz and the .9999 gold purity.

History of the Lunar Coins

The Perth Mint's Lunar Series II started in 2008 with the year of the mouse – although in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the celebrated animal is the rat. Each of the coins is steeped in over 2600 years of tradition marking the astrological believes of the ancient Chinese. Even today, there is a strong belief that people born under the rule of a particular animal harbour specific personality traits and characteristics.

The Lunar II Series follows on from the success of the original Lunar Series that began in 1996 although arguably have better and more detailed designs – but this is really a matter of personal taste. The Lunar goat appeals to investors and collectors for their rarity and symbolism. With only 12000 coins in total being minted covering three denominations, 1 oz, ¼ oz. and 1/10 oz the lunar coins are in short supply and high demand. In addition 1500 special three-coin box sets were produced.
