Design and Specifications of the Coin

The first edition of the Royal Australian Mint's Koala coin series features a koala sitting on a branch. The 2025 edition of the Australian Koala Gold Coin depicts, on the reverse side, an artistic image of a koala mother with her young sitting together on a eucalyptus branch. This design, created by Adam Ball, highlights the strong bond between mother and offspring and emphasizes the koalas’ natural habitat. The background is adorned with detailed depictions of eucalyptus leaves and fruits, symbolizing Australian flora.

The obverse side of the coin features the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne, along with the inscription “CHARLES III · AUSTRALIA 2025” and the denomination of 100 Australian Dollars. The coin is made of one ounce (31.1 g) of fine gold with a purity of 99.99% and has a diameter of 38.74 mm. The mintage is limited to 1,000 pieces, adding to its appeal for collectors.

The Royal Australian Mint: An Overview

Located in Canberra, the Royal Australian Mint was opened in 1965 and was the first mint in Australia to operate independently from the British Royal Mint. Prior to its founding, Australian coins were struck at branches of the Royal Mint in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Since opening, the Royal Australian Mint has produced over 15 billion coins and plays a central role in the production of Australian currency – primarily responsible for circulating and collector coins, while the Perth Mint specializes in bullion coins.

The Koala: A Symbol of Australia

The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is one of the most iconic animals featured on Australian coins. This tree-dwelling marsupial is found only in Australia and primarily inhabits the eucalyptus forests along the eastern and southern coasts of the country. Koalas are known for their dense, grey fur, large fluffy ears, and distinctive spoon-shaped nose. They feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves and spend up to 20 hours a day sleeping to conserve energy. These traits make them both endearing and fascinating representatives of Australia's wildlife.

Differences from the Australian Koala Coin by the Perth Mint

It’s important not to confuse the Australian Koala Gold Coin from the Royal Australian Mint with the coin of the same name from the Perth Mint. The Perth Mint has been issuing Koala coins since 2007, known for their annually changing designs – however, the Perth Mint’s Koala is primarily a silver bullion coin. While the Perth Mint now also offers a gold version and mints multiple weight units in silver, the Royal Australian Mint has released its Koala Gold Coin exclusively in the standard one-ounce format.
