Greek Drachma Gold Coins: A Piece of History

Collectors can own their own piece of history with Greek 20 Drachma gold coins. The modern gold coins date back to the 19th Century, but the tradition and values date back to the time of ancient Greece. The 20 Drachma is a romantic addition to any coin collection and contains the old-world standard of coin manufacturing, boasting a .900 grade fineness and weighing 4.5 grams.

Why buy 20 Drachma Gold Coins?

Greek Drachma 20 gold coins are steeped in history and since Greece reverted to the Euro in 2002, no longer produce drachma. Given these iconic coins date back the 9th Century they have a story to tell.

And what a story. The drachma inspired the current monetary system and enables countries to trade with one another all over the world. The modern coins date back to the mid-19th Century, but the old-worldly significance of the drachma is never in doubt.

Design of George I 20 Drachma Gold Coins

The obverse side of the 20 Drachma gold coin features the right-facing profile of King George I of Greece from 1863 until his death in 1913, whilst on the reverse is the original royal coat of arms of Greece featuring a cross inside a shield.

History of King George I Greek Drachma Gold Coins

The Greek Drachma dates back to the days of the ancients and has taken on many subdivisions. The monetary system developed by the Greeks in 800BCE laid the blueprint for the global trade of modern society.
The modern 20 drachma gold coin first made an appearance in 1832 following Greece’s independence from Ottoman rule. The coins contained the old world standard of 5.8 grams of gold and a fineness of .900 and featured the proverbial Phoenix rising from the flames as a symbol of the country’s freedom three years earlier.
When George I came to the throne, the design was updated to feature his right-facing bust. The phoenix was replaced with the Royal Coat of Arms of Greece.

Worth the premium

As a coin with more premium than some others in similar caragories, this coin holds its own with its unique reverse design, great detail and added desirability. Great little addition to any world coin collection.

Very good size for a gold coin

This is a neat little gold coin. That you don't see too often on the market.
I was very glad when I saw it was back available and jumped on the opportunity.
