The Coronation King Charles III Britannia 2023 One Ounce Gold Bullion Coin

Following the worldwide celebrations of the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on the 6th may 2023, the Royal Mint is pleased to announce the launch of a new range of bullion coins to mark this momentous occasion.

With many people never having witnessed a coronation, the moment was historic and brought communities together. The new range offers the opportunity to carry on celebrating this unique moment in British History.

To honour and celebrate his Majesty King Charles III, as part of the range, the Royal Mint has struck the one ounce gold bullion coin featuring the portrait of the new King with his crown.

The portrait by Martin Jennings

The effigy featured on the commemorative coins was designed by artist and sculptor Martin Jennings, and depicts the monarch wearing the Tudor Crown.Although the crown itself no longer exists in real life – having been destroyed in the 1640s – it was selected by the King to appear on the coin, following the tradition of other kings who used it in their portraits.

Mr Jennings, a famous sculptor and now coin designer for the Royal Mint said he was “proud” to have created the portrait, which he said was “both dignified and celebratory for this historic occasion”.

The inscription surrounding the effigy on the coins released reads "CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 100 POUNDS , shortened from Latin, which translates to "King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith".

The iconic Britannia by Philip Nathan

The Britannia coin is the world’s most secure coin and features innovative security technology. The surface animation creates movement in the background of waves, the micro-text provides both decoration and protection, and Britannia’s shield bears the Union flag which is accented with tincture lines. And finally the micro-text that borders the design states – ‘Decus et Tutamen’, which translates as ‘An ornament and a safeguard’.

Philip Nathan’s depiction of Britannia is of course as beautiful as ever. Britannia, the female warrior, the national personification of Britain, is holding a trident in her right arm and a shield bearing the Union Jack with her left hand. One of the oldest symbols of Britain, Britannia stands proud before the ocean and is surrounded by inscriptions bearing her name, year of mintage 2023, weight and purity.

Britannia gold coins have been issued by the Royal Mint since 1987. Until 2013, they were produced in 22ct (0.917) with some copper and silver in it. They are now made in 24ct a fineness of 999.9 and are truly remarkable. The craftsmanship is amazing and now featuring the portrait of the new King, they are a must-have in your collection.
